J:
This episode is not the finest in the J&B on the Rox series. In fact, it could be the most embarrassing. Oh, there are a few moments of clever repartee, a little bit of Bloomington contextualization that reminds us of the place and time in which the episode was made.
But there are shortcomings galore herein.
Conceptually, the show is lacking. It's basically just us hosts sitting in our new attic, yammering about what we're thankful for.
J: “I'm thankful that we live in a free country; for our civil liberties, the right to vote...”
B: “I'm thankful that I haven't gotten busted yet this year.”
And so on, in exceedingly choppy fashion, intercut with random snippets of video of our Bloomington surroundings overlaid by a stolen segment of music from the Beastie Boys. Fascinating.
There are numerous drinx here, which, if you're mixing along, might make the show tolerable. Or not.
There's one little funny bit, although it is obviously also the only pre-planned bit in the show. I give thanks for my nice clothes (ironic, since I'm wearing fucking pleated pants). B gives thanks for his underwear. At which point, we break out into a rousing rendition of “God Bless My Underwear,” to the tune of “God Bless America.” I dunno, it's funny to me at least.
Ultimately, the main problem with this episode, in my eyes, is the fact that I was sporting a ghastly mullet more suitable for Halloween. At the end of this episode, there's a feeble attempt to correct this problem, when hair consultant R shows up and draws pictures of me with different haircuts. Her drawings are shockingly good. Her suggestions aren't, and ultimately, the problem is left hanging for a future episode.
Overall, this episode is sure proof of the folly of poor planning. I suppose it's worth giving thanks for that important lesson.
